Battery anti-corrosion
What have some of you tried with or without success to prevent corrosion on your battery terminals?

Re: Battery anti-corrosion
I have had good luck with vaseline or dielectric grease. But I run on pavement and keep the cart clean. This might not be best for off road carts. The spray on stuff works ok, I think, but it looks a lot like the corrosion I'm trying to keep off.
The key is regular maintenance, I believe. I keep a cheap tank sprayer filled with water and baking soda mixture just for the cart. Periodically I spray the batteries and then rinse with very light spray from garden hose. Dry with rags or leaf blower. I also try to keep the water level correct. Too much is almost as bad as too little. I haven't had any seepage from the caps or drips on the floor for years. This also helps to slow the self discharge rate. |

Re: Battery anti-corrosion
Believe it or not...as batteries age the heating and cooling mixed in with the vibration causes the top cover of the batteries to break-down the seal around the battery posts. Using the fiber washers soaked with anti-corrosion liquid stops a lot of corrosion. Obviously the gassing from the vent caps is the main issue and anything that seals the posts and cable from the oxygen in the air will slow or limit the growth of the dreaded corrosion. Back in the old days axle grease did the trick but was seriously messy.

Re: Battery anti-corrosion
I have been using dielectric grease now for three years. Once a year I check all connections and I average two connections per year with corrosion that I can wipe off with a rag. I use this http://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p/BK_7651824/

Re: Battery anti-corrosion
I ended up ordering a can of NOCO NCP2. I have some grease used in electrical panels and I have used it on my automobiles but it's pretty messy (which may be a good thing) Anyway, I'll try this spray when it gets here and see how well it works.

Re: Battery anti-corrosion
The ncp2 terminal spray arrived and my initial impression is very good. I got the spray and cut out a cardboard template to keep the overspray to a minimum.
This stuff is relatively thin, red in color and I'm pretty sure I've seen it on new car battery terminals. Pretty easily pinpointed and it seems to dry like paint. I especially like that it's not a greasy mess. Time will tell how well it's anti- corrosion properties work. |
