pulled the motor to have a look. Nothing looks bad. Brushes are good. Double checked continuity between S1 & S2 and A1 & A2 on the motor and it checks out. I also checked the cables. I'm getting continuity from S1 cable end to S2 cable end so the contactor is connected while not being energized.
It all seems to be in working order individually. I'm just stumped. When I bypassed the contactor previously, I moved the S1 cable the + lug on the contactor and the S2 cable to the lug that the A1 cable attaches to. This should have closed the circuit and the motor should have turn either forward or reverse when the peddle was pressed. But this condition also had the voltage drop to 26.5V on the controller side of the solenoid.

Bypass your solenoid by putting both cables on one post. Voltage dropping on the controller side sounds like bad contacts in the solenoid.

wanted to give an update to this thread. After chasing my tail, I decided to buy a new Alltrax controller. Got it installed today and everything is working as it should. Thanks for all the help and suggestions along the way
