94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
Hi
I have a non-lifted 94 Ezgo medalist and I am looking to upgrade the performance. I'm running a stock motor and speed control. I do mostly street driving in residential areas with a lot of hills. I'd like to get a combo of speed and torque out of a new setup. Decent run time would be a bonus. Any direction to a good source for upgrade would be appreciated to. Thanks JT |

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
Welcome to BGW.
With a series wound motor: Speed = $$$ Just about any of the forum sponsors (click on menu bar above) can help you out, but Scotty spells it out pretty well. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Custom_Options.html Run Time equates to battery capacity. The more lead in the battery, the greater the capacity. IE: Both 8 x 6V batteries and 6 x 8V Batteries will give you a 48V battery pack, but the 8 x 6V will have more run time. Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
Increasing the pack voltage to 48v will give 30% more torque and speed & like Johnnie said, 8/6v will give about 30% more run time. This is my choice

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
you need to start with at least 4ga. cables. all 13. this will give a seat of the pants improvement. at least it did on mine. then i would go to a larger controller,hd f/r switch and hd solenoid. imho, the next step would be 48v. your stock motor can handle all this. if that is not enough, then go to a upgrade on the motor.
just like if you built a car-just putting a larger engine without where withall to feed it is a waste. again, just an opinion, based on what i have done. mine will run about 21 mph. you can run 6x8 batts and keep all of them in the cart, but the run time will not be quite as long. also, welcome to BGW. |

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
I did this same thing. I live in a hilly area and most of my driving is on the street. I first upgraded wires, HD solenoid & HD F&R. This did not change the speed. I then changed the controller to 48v 480Amp and added two more 6v batteries. This did give a nice increase in torque and speed though still not enough for street driving. I then changed to a Plum Quick Assassin motor wound for 5600rpm. This gives me great performance: I get 25 on flat with 35 down slope and 17 - 20 uphill. Trying to go faster with hills would over heat the motor!
If I was to start over, I would have done either 8 X 8v (64v) or 8 X 12v (96v) and the corresponding controller and motor. |

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
Thanks for all the great advice! If I stay with 36v and upgrade all the other components, motor, controller, wires and solenoid will I see a difference? also how will that affect the run time?

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
IN a series wound motor only increased voltage will increase RPMs & give more speed. A bigger controller will increase torque, new cables will improve delivery and so on. Run time will only be effected by how you drive.

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
What's the biggest controller I can use with the 36v setup?
