Front drive Unit fluid
How do I check the fluid in the front drive unit (clutch) of a 1972 Harley gas cart and what fluid does it take.

Re: Front drive Unit fluid
Service manual says takes 12 ounces of "Harley Davidson Transmission Lubricant"...not gonna get that at the local NAPA. I'm willing to guess that one of the guys who regularly works on these can tell you what generic weight oil to use.
Drawing (page 4-4) shows the fill plug as item #27. Just my guess because I was in middle school when this was built but would need to either remove it and drain/refill, or somehow siphon it all out first without removing. Here's the BGW link to that service manuals if you don't already have it: https://buggiesgonewild.com/columbia...63_1980_GS.pdf |

Re: Front drive Unit fluid
Somewhere in this forum " harley davidson gas carts" is a post that says to use gear oil and fill through the rubber plug hole in the primary clutch cover and fill until it runs out(like a car differential or standard transmission). As I recall, the 'hole' should be at either 5 o'clock or 7 o'clock or 4 and 8 and I cannot recall which. No harm if the 5 or seven chosen as the result will be a slight undersell if 4 and 8 are actually correct.

Re: Front drive Unit fluid
Chuck the spell check got you again. I hate when my fix is just as wrong. Happens when I type up the service bulletins all the time.

Re: Front drive Unit fluid
90 weight gear oil is "spec" but that stuff is increasingly getting difficult to find for whatever reason. I have been using 85 weight gear oil for years so you'll be fine with it.
