What to look for in a CL gasser

Blue or white smoke indicates worn rings or valve seals that are allowing oil into the combustion chamber. Black smoke usually indicates that your air/fuel mixture is too rich. I'd much rather have a black smoke issue than blue/white smoke. You may need to adjust the mixture screw on your carb or see if maybe your air filter is dirty and restricting air flow.

I'm guessing the motor is simply worn out. I have to decide what to do with this cart. It is definitely rebuildable and I may go ahead and have the engine rebuilt and basically re-new everything on the cart. I have another electric cart project that is in front of this one as far as time and money resources are concerned so it will likely be a while until I can get on this one.

Just to recap my earlier post:

Black smoke: probably fuel related and not a big deal.
White/blue smoke: Worn out rings or valve seals.

Since you described option 1 as being your problem, I would not think that your motor is worn out. But hey, if you're apathetic about the cart, I'll give you $100 for it! You're not anywhere near northeast Ohio are you?

I can't say for sure on the smoke color as I work on it at night. I'll fire it up during the day and make note. Sure seemed dark gray and didn't have that burned oil 70's vega smell. There sure is a lot of it though. Only reason I jumped right to a rebuild is I can have a pro job done for under 700 bucks including shipping for the core. That's a set a batteries in the sparky world and would guarantee me years of trouble free service.
I will tinker some more with it and try to drive it again. It backfires too.

After starting it up this morning I do see white, blue, black and grey smoke!

It's pretty clear, it needs to be rebuilt. Let's not forget I paid 150.00 for this cart.

I'm going to rebuild the engine after I'm done with my villager4.
