Default 1984 EZ GO Marathon Total Reconstruct Drive Clutch Question

coming a long way with project will post some pics tonight (6/23/13)
I have a question about drive clutch, it seems the belt rides pretty high on the drive clutch wall and will not let the motor idle when in gear, and wants to pull the driven clutch in turn it kills engine.
I'm wondering there is about 1/4" of clutch shaft showing on the outside of the clutch like it wont open all the way is this normal or do I have a problem with the clutch? seems if it will open all the way the belt would fall to the shaft and not be pinched so the belt will not turn. any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

If it's a new belt it might need time to break in a little. New belts are always very grippy like that.

If it's an old belt, try a different brand. Some belts are not the same with the angles on the sides. If the angles of the belt don't match the angles of the clutch, it can grab more than normal. You can look at the belt that's in there and see if you can tell if it's worn on one edge more than another.
