Thanks. So should I purchase a different pulley?

The pulley I used was part number 625716. They have a kit that includes the belt and pulley but didn’t work for me.. I used the above pulley with the stock belt and was good to go.

@KGSC

Thank you for your help. I washed the pulley and discovered it is gold. Can I replace it with a different pulley? If so, can you recommend one?

An addition: I tried spinning the belt a bit and it started right up.

@KGSC
I ordered the pulley. The pulley that arrived is smooth inside and has a slot for a key to hold it in place of the shaft of the starter. The starter shaft is appears to be threaded and has no slot. Is there something, I'm not comprehending? The shaft and the pulley appear to be incompatible. Thanks

Slot didn’t matter. It has a tapered shaft. Is there a spacer?

The shaft has a slight taper, is threaded, has no slot. It appears there is a spacer on the shaft between the pulley and the main housing of the starter.

It has been a while but I am pretty sure I had to remove the spacer. Here is what it looked like after installing.. Did you determine the manufacture of the starter ?
