Hey i know this is an old post, But just bought this exact cart. Been working at getting it going. Im having issues with getting this thing to rev up, it fires and the wheels turn when they’re lifted, but wont give me high enough RPMs to get it moving.
Been playing with the carb mix with no success.
Any tips??

1) Check for blocked exhaust. 2) Do a compression test

Really, there can be a lot of things holding you back. The stuff that RayHD through out there is good advice. As well, if your clutches aren't opening / closing right one or both could be holding you back. Also, you could have a fuel draw issue that you want to check the sticky on. As your the load on your cart increases so does the need for more gas.

Can i run it with the muffler removed? Will The piston being exposed through the exhaust port impact compression? The header doesn’t look clogged, but the muffler is quite heavy. Could be gummed up in there

A way to check is to disconnect the muffler and see if the problem is corrected. I would hate to say how many times we were tuning the carb without understanding it was a clogged muffler.

Disconnected the exhaust and got the motor flying today. Seemed to get Much higher RPMs and wheels were moving quick. So looks like clogged muffler is my issue...
Multiple people are saying to just toss it in a fire to burn away the crap.. is this effective?

Did mine differently. Soaked it a tub of kerosene until tar stopped coming out. Then flushed it with hot water until that was clear and finally blew the water out with compressed air. I was afraid the BBQ method would weaken the whole structure. Be Aware the exhaust system for the 1982 HD / Columbia carts is made of unobtainium.

I BBQed the one from Yamaha G1 and it worked great. Fire blew out of the inlet for about an hour.

Are these mufflers filled with fibreglass? What is the effect on the packing when burning them ?
