1993 Marathon - Differential Lube Question
I have a 1993 EZGO Marathon. Want to check / add differential lube (SAE 80-90). The only access I see is the drain plug on bottom and the axle vent plug. I assume that the I can check and add lube by removing the vent plug but I don't know how to check for proper level. Any ideas?

Re: 1993 Marathon - Differential Lube Question
To change the differential lube you have to drop the pan and then reinstall it. Make sure you have some RTV or other gasket making material. Scrape off all the old gasket and make sure the pan flange is straight and flat (rubber mallet works great), apply RTV and bolt back on.
If you just want to add lube or are trying to refill after removing the pan then make sure you are parked on a level surface and remove the plug. You will need some kind of pump or filler squeeze tube to attach to the bottle of oil (auto parts stores have cheap plastic ones that work fine). You just add oil until it begins to run out the plug hole. Once it starts coming out it is full so just reinstall the plug and your done. Dont forget a drop cloth and catch pan it is a messy job! |

Re: 1993 Marathon - Differential Lube Question
I purchased some 90 wt outboard lower unit oil in a really handy small 8 oz. tube (WalMart) I then added 2 ft of 7/16 OD x 5/16 ID vinyl tube (hardware store) to the squeeze tube(was a perfect fit !). I then poked the other end of the tubing up into the fill hole as far as I could and then just squeezed oil in until it overflowed. On my 2008, the bottom 1/4 (approx.) of the big gear is submerged in oil. Not sure what your pan looks like but covering the bottom 1/4 of the big gear should be enough oil for yours also. The teeth on the big gear carries oil up (like a water wheel) to lube the small pinion gear. My 2008 calls for 30 wt oil and I opted for a mixture of 30 wt + 90 wt. Good luck - RAY
