Default Yamaha Drive 2 Differential Overflow Leak.

Good day all, some what new to golf carting.
Have a 2017 Yamaha Drive 2 gas carb model.

I changed the diff gear oil recently.

I filled the fluid until it just barely dripped out on the fill hole on level ground.

Now the overflow hose is spitting gear oil after a drive.

I pulled out the fill plug on level ground to check and can see the gear oil, but none drips out. Am I missing something? Is it normal for this differential to do this? It is only coming out the vent hose.

Thanks much, I am a bit perplexed.

I have a 2014 drive and it is supposed to hold 1.8 quarts. Filling it all the way to the top may be too much. I put 1 quart and 26 oz. in mine but I don't know if it is all the way to the top or not.

Its not normal. The car's dif holds16 ounces. On a level surface, the oil level should be at the bottom of the plug hole. This assumes that the car is level and does not have a lift kit installed.

Thanks for the replies, I did see 16 oz is the amount.

I do not know how much I put in, I just filled until is spilled out, old school car logic.

No lift, and for sure level ground.
I did use valvoline gear oil which I now know is incorrect as it has no LSD lubricant, so I have ordered Yamalube and will refill with that with the correct amount and see.

Too much gear oil or the wrong viscosity can cause this.

Thanks for all the input, one more question, my basic manual says the cart uses Yamalube SAE 90, is this it? It says marine gearcase lube so I want to make sure I ordered the correct item.
Thanks again!

I don't know what makes the marine lube special enough to call it marine lube. It probably wont hurt your car but I would just go to your local automotive parts store and buy 80/90 gear oil.

When I went to Yamaha Technical training there were a few complaints from people that diff oil did overflow sometimes and Yamaha is aware of it so don't be to alarmed if it continues once the change is made but def put the correct amount of the right oil in it...That being said It should be a very minimal drip not a flow and to prevent further stains and continue air flow I have found that putting a standard in-line fuel filter attached to the end of the overflow line and zip-tying it will allow air flow but prevent drips from happening...hope that helps

Thumbs up Re: Yamaha Drive 2 Differential Overflow Leak.

Thanks very much!
Finally had a chance to swap the fluid, I did finally find the real mccoy yamalube at my local dealer, 80w-90, and filled it with the correct amount, added the fuel filter to the vent hose, zip tied it to the correct location and have only had one small drip so far, so fingers crossed, will drive it more this week.

I did talk to a tech at the local shop and he indicated that using gear oil with no LSD component and overfilling could easily result in frothing and leakage out the vent hose. Thanks for the help, this forum is great!
