G1 no baffle in cylinder exhaust control
Decided to cook the muffler as some have suggested while I have it off to rebuild my S G . Looked into the exhaust port and see just a rod with 2 holes in it. looks like a butterfly of some sort should be there. Can I run this with out it? thanks in advance

Re: G1 no baffle in cylinder exhaust control
Looking throw the exhaust port you can see two holes in the piston that means the piston is in backwards

Re: G1 no baffle in cylinder exhaust control
What I am seeing is a rod in the exhaust port with linkage attached that moves with the throttle. Seems there should be a plate attached to it.

Re: G1 no baffle in cylinder exhaust control
That's some kind of exhaust back pressure butterfly that Yamaha engineered, not totally sure of the actual purpose. Every G1 I've ever owned I removed them, most I've worked on they have been removed. They were hooked to a ball and socket linkage that ran to the carb throttle linkage. If the butterfly portion is removed, the vertical shaft should stay installed because it plugs the holes. Hopefully the linkage is also removed? Should not affect performance at all.

Re: G1 no baffle in cylinder exhaust control
You can replace your exhaust manifold with one from a snowmobile. They didn't have the butterfly or shaft and are a direct replacement.
