Default 1993 Gas Club Car has NO LOW END torque

I have a 93 Gas Club Car. It has a lift kit and 22 inch tires. It has absolutely no low end torque. I took it to a golf cart repair shop. A new carburetor and fuel lines were put on, a $500 tune up. It still has no low end torque. When stopped on a hill it will not start moving. The motor won't wrap very high when taking off. After it is rolling, it runs great and has good speed. Would a new driven clutch spring help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Man, I don't know.. I have a new drive clutch and belt on mine, no driven changes and no special springs and does quite well actually. Make sure when your in maintenance mode on the golf cart and you rev the engine up that your belt is going all the way to the top of your drive clutch. If not, check for notching and wearing on the clutch when you run your finger up the inside of it..

I have checked that previously and the belt does travel to the outside of the drive clutch. I've tried a different belt also.

Is the drive clutch supposed to stay open until the engine gains a few rpms? Mine does not. the instant the engine starts to rev up the clutch starts to expand.

When you say "absolutely no low-end torque" that sounds pretty extreme. Does it really perform that bad? I lifted my cart with 22" tires and yes, there were some hills that it couldn't crest, but on flat ground and even shallow and medium hills it performed pretty well. And this is with the 1984-1991 KF82 motor, which has 1hp less than the one in your cart.

I recommend you send your driven clutch to Tom at Cart Parts Plus and have him put a new high-performance spring in it and machine the sheaves. I had mine done and have yet to find a hill I can't top.

As far as low end torque, you will never be able to do burnouts or roostertails of thick mud with the stock motor and 22s, so if that's your goal, you need to to look into a motor swap.

You can stand in front of this one and give it gas and am able to keep it from taking off.

Ok yeah that sounds pretty bad.

Measure the center-to-center distance between the drive and driven clutch. It should be 9 5/8". Reason I ask is because if a previous owner had the motor out, they may have put it back in without regard for proper spacing between the clutches, which could cause an issue.

I will check that this evening. If it is off, are there adjustments where the motor is mounted?

I'm not 100% sure on the FE290s, but on my '87 (KF82), you can loosen the motor mounts and slide the motor backwards & forwards in elongated holes in the cradle plate and then re-tighten. I would imagine there's a similar setup on your '93.

Pretty sure on the FE290 there is no engine position adjustment but the experts may contradict me....
