Default 87 Gasser Starts and Floods

I have an 87 gasser that I picked up as a rust-to-runner project. The history is that I have honed the cylinder, rebuild the fuel pump, replaced the carb with an aftermarket, replaced the igniter, cleaned the fuel tank and mixed up some new fuel. What I get is that it starts and runs for about 3 seconds and then will not pick back up until I let off and hit it again. It will keep doing that until I run the battery down. It does start right back up over and over again so I pulled the plug between starts and have notice that it is really wet. Need to re-jet carb?

These carbs can sit on shelves for years.
Check the new carb for a float sticking or
some junk in the inlet needle, some crud may have broke
loose in handling the fuel lines.

Use some number drill bits to determine the old
and new jet diameters, although you should not be onto
the main if its not revving.

Thank you for the reply. I should have mentioned that this is the second new carb. The first one was acting up the same way and the store exchanged it for me. I will go back in a check this one out to make sure it is clean a free like you suggested. It does rev up for the few seconds that it runs.

Would anyone know the right plug to be using in the 2pg? I have a new one that I ordered from a parts supplier though I do not know if it is the correct one for the cart.

Thanks. I think I am going to need a shop manual. I just pulled the plug that they sent me and it is a NGK BP4HS. Not knowing what is the difference in plugs I am going to get the one your manual list and see if that helps.

This is the manual I use. I know it says 85 but it works just fine with my 88. the body may be alittle different in some areas but as far as the frame, running gear, and motor it looks like my 2pg. hope you are able to open this attachment. Donald

Thanks that is going to help a lot. I have found a ton of info in there that I had no clue about. I did not know these things really had adjustable timing. Would you happen to know what compression it should have? I just ran a test and it has about 80 psi.

He's correct about the 90 or less compression. Mine was at 90, would crank and run but would only move at a walk. tried everything I could and finally tore it down to find the rings shot the piston shot and the cylinder shot.
