Drive Clutch

What is the best way to check and see if my drive clutch is working like it should? It just acts like it is in high gear, Then if i run it long enough it will start to work right ( or what i think is right) motor revs up and pulls good.Then if i climb a hill i can feel it grab like it shifts gears and i am back to no power. dont get me wrong it does OK when this happens but i think it should do twice what it does now on the power. If i were to just use it on the road it would be fine lie it is, but to go off road is out of the question and i still have stock tires on it.

There are many things that can cause it to seem like it has no power. Jack up the back end and put it on stands. Remove the seat and then observe the clutches as you run the engine. You should see the drive or front clutch close smoothly and as it continues to close pull the belt toward the outside as it does this it will pull the belt toward the inside of the driven or rear clutch all of this is what changes the gear ratio. Worn drive clutch faces, a worn belt, worn ramps or buttons on the driven clutch all will give you this sort of trouble. Check the belt to see what its width is. If it is not at least 1 3/16 wide then it may need to be replaced. Cheap fix. Shorter belt is a cheap fix too. Buttons on the driven clutch are cheap. worn clutch face....not so cheap. Hows your compression?

The compression is good , the belt is new (OEM for the 98 TXT) I did not get the shorter belt. The drive clutch looks to me like it works too well. At just above an idle it starts to close.

not saying this will fix your problem coon hunter but its always good for any engine to have the valves adjusted from time to time. seems to perk up any engine i have delt with no matter the age
