Going through coils!!?!
Hello all...so the 87 Columbia / Par Car is going through coils...I get about a month out of each coil using the cart a couple times a week (I've been using stock, internal resistor coils).
Whenever they go they're really hot afterwards...so I assume I got some electrical issue. I'm not getting power to the coil with just the F/R switch on...which was my first through...it's only powering up when the pedal micro switch is activated (which is how it's supposed to work I assume). Other than that it does tend to back fire a bit if I let off the gas, let the cart coast, then step on the gas. And I need to cycle the choke a few times to get it to start...regardless of a hot or cold engine. Don't know if any of these symptoms point to anything...I just assume they are seperate issues. Any thoughts? Do I need a new start solenoid? Could something else be leaking into the coil? What typically causes coils to burn out like this? Thanks for any help! |

Re: Going through coils!!?!
Hi BareProductions,
I've been told by a cart mechanic that the microswitch is what causes the backfire in your situation. You have to set it so the fuel isn't pumping after you take your foot off the pedal. The fuel loads up and bang! Don't know about the coil problem. You should download the manual and see if things are wired correctly. Hope someone who knows more will be along soon. |

Usually it is a momentary coil trying to do the job of a continuous coil? |

Re: Going through coils!!?!
I run a mopar auto coil with a external ballast resistor. Maybe you want to check your running voltage and see that it is not over charging?

Re: Going through coils!!?!
Thanks for the suggestions all!
Do you think it could have anything to do with the plug wire? Is it possible to burn out a coil from too much resistance in the wire plug wire? The guy I bought it from had used a regular auto HEI plug wire...I swapped it out with one I had laying around and the coil seems to be cooler after running than before. |
