Question Getting ready to tear into our G1!

When we first fire it up it has a bit of a ping.
I can turn the by grasping the clutch, as I turn the engine (I am guessing as it gets to bottom center) it has a little play and if you rock it (spint it) back and forth a little you can hear something metal slapping. Past that point it is quiet and feels fine (I am guessing top center)

Any thoughts.

I spoke to a mechanic today (before I heard the noise) he said to just replace the blown head gasket and move on. (again, that was before I heard the noise)
Motor still runs and has 90 psi Compression.

There are two ways to look at this.
1. If it works don't fix it. That would mean put the gasket in it and run it till it breaks.
2. Fix it before it breaks. Rebuild it now and you won't damage as much, and will save in parts.

With a motor of this age, I would probably keep running it. The parts cost the same, as long as you don't damage the cases or the crankshaft. They sell cylinders and cranks and all....
If you don't want to be stranded somewhere??....

Good LUCK tony

Sure it is not the clutch? I'd plan to tear into it soon, but that is just me.
