Default Textron 2 stroke to 670 swap

Well I got invited to some sort of of golf cart race next weekend, and none of my projects were running yet. I am having to rush and put together some sort of budget build so that I could join in the fun.

I had an old rusting ezgo 2 stroke in my backyard, and an old sprint racer chassis. The sprint racer had a live axle and hydraulic brake setup that I wanted to transfer over to the cart. Being that the ezgo's two stroke engine was locked up, and the transaxle had no reverse gear anyways, I figured some sort of chain drive solution would be a quick option.

Craigslist 670 vtwin seemed like a fun and quick way to get off the line. The race rules limited top speed to 35mph, so I'm hoping the vtwin's lower rpm wouldn't be a huge detractor. I think with some sprocket math, and wheel diameter, I can get close to that.

I used the original swing arm from the golf cart, but unbolted the rear axle from it. I then welded a carrier mount for the live axle's bearing carriers in a way that seems reversible if I ever want to revert the cart back to a transaxle later.

The sprint racer used a #50/530 chain, 48T sprocket. I am adding a jack shaft to be driven by CVT. I ordered a comet 780 clone driver clutch for the motor. I am on the hunt for a driven clutch to match but that's getting hard to find. Could really use some advice there.

I was hoping the original driven clutch would work but it's got a splined puck on one side. I'd need to bore it out and my lathe won't handle that without new tooling...so I'd prefer to find a cheap 1" bore/keyed driven clutch that takes a 1 3/16" width belt.

While I wait for a clutch solution, I'm pot committed to the plan at this point. I've gone ahead and created a low sling engine mount and got the engine bolted in.

Some other fun tinkering while I wait for a clutch solution.

Cool project! Short timeline though lol. I think you'd be better served using the stock golf cart transaxle/rear end. Less time etc, and with big tires you will get 25-30 mph. It'll handle the abuse of the 670 for the short term. You could weld the spider gears to get posi.

I'm also thinking you'll want to install a rev kit on the engine so you can safely rev past 4000 rpm if you accidentally have to, otherwise you might bend a pushrod etc.

Using gear and chain components with belt components is tricky. You also could use a go kart CVT/Torq-a-Verter. Finding one on short notice might be the issue, but it would be a bolt together situation, with only mounting tab fabrication, rather than machine work to convert splined to smooth etc. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Slonomo. I had thought about a comet 40/30 type setup but I was worried it wouldn't handle the torque of the 670. I think I'm going to go with a comet 90D with a 1" bore. It should use the stock belt size.

By sticking with a sprocket drive gives me more versatile gearing ratio options, but yes...this wasn't as plug and play as I had hoped.

It sounds like you know what you're doing with the gears etc. If that's what you're comfortable with, I'm sure you can figure that out and make it work. It does give you lots of flexibility with gear sizes etc. So I'm assuming you'd use some kind of spring loaded chain tensioner? The machining is out of my wheelhouse, don't have a lathe etc.
