Default How\Where do I safely dispose of an old and bulging Lithium pack?

Anyone know of the proper way to safely dispose of an old lithium pack? I know of battery recycle centers, but I'm terrified some knuckle-head will look at this as any ordinary battery and mishandle it. Call me crazy, but I'm afraid of the consequences if the thing erupts due to someone else mishandling it.

Check automotive salvage yards. There are enough electric cars on the roads now that many salvage yards are trained to handle and dispose of lithium batteries.
Another option would be to check with somewhere like Batteries Plus or a large electronic ssupply store. Most have recyclers who handle lithium batteries on a regular basis.

Our local landfill has a hazardous waste drop off section.
