Batteries arrived a little bit ago :) Pretty cool to see them and think about finally getting started on this. Thought I would post up a pic of the batteries and the other goodies that I have amassed so far for you guys to critique. Not pictured is the Nidec motor that I have already installed.

Thanks guys (I will text these to you tomorrow also, Monte)!

One more of the wiring harness that I have (I have to double check if it will work, as I think it is for a V-Glide, which I had but swapped out for an MCOR).

True.

The "BMS" that the battery seller has is really just a balancer. Not really a true BMS. And he wants a lot of kopecks for it. However it worked for my setup as I have added other components to my system. That said, my setup does NOT have a readout for imbalanced conditions and such. It's something I'm willing to live with but not as bullet proof as some of the more elaborate systems.

The issue I ran into and wasn't smart enough to solve is that the Volt batteries are a 12p3s setup on each pack. I have 2. I just didn't know how to tie all that into a BMS. Instead I have the balancers on each pack and then an under-voltage cutoff. I also have an over-current cutoff, but given that the batteries are rated for 7c continuous and 10c burst my 100Ah pack can deliver 700a continuous. Not really gonna hurt it at the 200-300a my Navitas pulls.

I appreciate that info, Monte, and look forward to chatting with you. I now get that I need a BMS (2 actually) but don't want to go the "easy route" unless it makes sense. I'm excited to do this, but really want to do it right; don't think I'll do another one and this is for my wife :)

I gotta admit-this has got me pretty fired up and should be fun!

Listen to Sergio. I know nothing about the Chevy Volt set ups and did not know they are two separate packs.

I am definitely going to listen to those smarter than me, and I respect Sergio's opinion. One pack only gives 50aH so I grabbed two :)

I figured that You were going to parallel the packs that is why I made that comment as it requires two BMSs and makes it very costly to use the expensive BMSs.

I would say the primary function of the BMS is to monitor and provide LV & HV protection for the cells, balancing the cells is secondary to the safety.

Monitoring at the pack voltage level does not guarantee cell safety (reminder for other members that may not be aware).

Left Coast Kiteboarding, do those balancing boards you have provide any connections that can be used to interface relays in order to disable the cart/charger?

Tore all the old crappy battery support metal out and have cut new aluminum angle; starting to mockup the battery placement. Got new shocks installed and R&R'd the motor (forgot anti seize the first time!). Hoping to work on the wiring harness and component layout over the long weekend. Makes me smile to see some progress :)
