Most of the time the only bearings that need to be replaced are the ones on the input shaft, but that also usually needs to come apart for synchro rings and/or input gears if they're chewed up from the bearings going bad.
Brad used to have some videos on the Youtube showing the process. Kinda neat watch if you can find them, not sure if they're still on there anymore.
You’re absolutely right, I was thinking of the 4wheeler rear end I rebuilt recently where the bearings were pressed into the case.

Still should be fine with a 12 ton press though.

Update here. Transaxle made it safely to Brad in British Columbia and he made quick work of the repair. Problem turned out to be a worn out synchro-ring. 20+ years of hard use and abuse had worn it out. He's posted a video here if you want to see the issue.

Now if we can just get it back through customs and down to Texas. Top tip... when shipping something to be repaired in Canada make sure to call this out in detail on the customs forms otherwise you'll end up paying import fees like I did.

Final post here. Got the Transaxle back from Brad this week and just fished reinstalling it. Works great! Very glad I went this route and would use Brad again.

Triumphant test drive video...
