Re: Pipe Bender
I bought and use the HF bender and made a bumper for my cart that turned out very well. You just have to go slow and move the piece in small increments and can then do 90 degree bends with no kinks. For the price you can't really go wrong with this one.
I bought an air over hydraulic jack for my bender as I thought it would make the job easier. I didn't get the jack mounted yet but have come up with another idea that will work much better I think. I have some magazines my dad gave me that give ideas coming out of others shops. One I saw was someone that made a metal brake using their hydraulic log splitter. This gave me an idea and I'm going to give it a go. I'll take the blade off my splitter and make an attachment on the ram for holding the bending dies and then mount the rest of my bender on the splitter bed. This sould make it so that I can quickly and easily move the piece with one hand while I work the bender with the other. It should work great and give me a use for my splitter so that it doesn't set all summer not being used. |

Re: Pipe Bender
The only limitation on the log splitter is that they usually have a small pump and low operating pressure.you could rig up a secondary system for when u use it for bending. We had a similar design machine at the fab shop I worked at it was great.very handy to have around. We had a foot pedal on it too.

Re: Pipe Bender
pachanga, Not sure what you mean. Guess I don't know enough about Hydraulics. My wood splitter is a 22 ton.
I thought that would work great for the bending. |

Re: Pipe Bender
The tonnage you have is good, for small stuff you'll be fine, but the smaller pumps used on most splitters just don't have the power to bend like you would think. It should do anything on a cart without trouble, once you pass 1/4" tonnage requirements for bending climb quick.Put a guage on it,and see what it maxes' out at for relief-pressure(that "Squauk" at the end of cylinder-travel).If its' under 1000psi,you can probably turn it up to 1250-1300psi for use as a bender, but turn it back down when splitting.

Re: Pipe Bender
Thanks Pachanga, I'll check it out.
What type guage do I need, where would I find it and how/where would I install it? |

Re: Pipe Bender
Well, I finally got to this project, now that winter may finally be over. I spent about 4 hours making then rebracing the HF pipe bender after the first thick walled pipe.
It works great on the thick walled pipe from my well that I used for my brush guard. It doesn't even slow down (No Squawk) I had to really watch the first couple bends as it bent so easy. I'm impressed with it and can switch back to the splitter, removing the bender, in about 10 minutes. The bender isn't mounted/bolted anywhere on the splitter and doesn't change it one bit. And making a bumper or roll cage will be so easy now...... I just need to start collecting and stocking up on pipe. |
