Gear ratio tire size max & max rpm
What's the formula to figure this out?
Right now I have stock gears ,25" tires on a stock GE motor 4400 rpm at 36 volts How many rpm's am I turning at 72volts 41 mph Can I boost another 72 volts for a total of 144? can I go to a 6/1 gear? 144 volts should give me tons of torque And the 6/1 gear should give me top end speed |

Re: Gear ratio tire size max & max rpm
at 144 volts that motor will turn into a nice metal slinging bomb...

because we don't know if that's motor unloaded rpm? Motor loaded rpm? If loaded, how much load? Point is we need to know the gear ratio. If your cart has 12.44:1,then with a 25"od tire...math..math...math I come out to 167.3 motor rpm/mph so at 41 mph = 6862 motor rpm. (regardless of what voltage) I also think running 72V is pushing it as it is! I am doing the same but I try to keep in mind what the strength and weakness of my system are so I use my cart accordingly. If you go 6:1 gear ratio on your 25" tires, you are going to pull major amps on takeoff and I imagine at speed as well because the motor will not be able to reach a happy higher rpm where the amp draw can fall off. So unless the whole system is beefed up to handle this I don't recommend doing higher voltage and gears. This is just my non professional opinion! |

Re: Gear ratio tire size max & max rpm
The answers:
I have stock gears ,25" tires on a stock GE motor 4400 rpm at 36 volts 26.3 MPH How many rpm's am I turning at 72volts 41 mph 6850 RPM Can I boost another 72 volts for a total of 144?Sure but you will need another motor, D&D make them $1700 plus mods. can I go to a 6/1 gear? Sure 144 volts should give me tons of torque And the 6/1 gear should give me top end speed And likely rip the axles out of the cart The only consideration left the 1/2 mile you will be able to go on a battery charge. |

Re: Gear ratio tire size max & max rpm
A weekend warrior
Not full out racing just want to stay on top as the fastest cart in the neighborhood I am running 41 mph now with several carts nipping at my heels Looking for the next step in performance and not really sure what to do Motor?controller? Controller bypass/ boost setup? Gears? Or more voltage What is the next biggest bang for the buck |

Re: Gear ratio tire size max & max rpm
Actually, there is a "fault" in that formula. That is theroretically correct, meaning if the cart is jacked and not running on the road. Friction, drag (wind), cart and passenger weight, type of running surface, just to name the major factors, are not considered.
That formula considers the engine rpm x 60 to get the rev per hour, the circumference of the tire (to get the distance traveled- theoretically) and the final gear ratio (a divisor). |
