Paint Question
I am getting ready to paint my Club Car Precedent. The body is removed and I will begin the cleaning today. I am spraying adhesion promoter first, then automotive primer, then top coat, then clear coat using a medium activator. my question is do i need to add flex additive in the primer, top coat or clear? I've read different threads on other forums and I can't find a definitive answer.
Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: Paint Question
Ok I'm subscribing to this one :)
I wonder if your body is the same material as mine, I have an older 94 club car ds, seems like plastic but I've done major cutting and almost seems like there is some paper in the mix ? |

Re: Paint Question
The body on my 2012 Precedent seems to be all plastic. When the body is not on the cart, it is pretty flexible since the body itself does not have any structural components to it. This is why I am concerned that after I paint it and when I am reinstalling it on the cart, that flex will crack the paint. Its not that I am worried about using the flex, but for one, I would need to purchase it and two, I'm not sure if adding the flex would have some kind of adverse reaction with the adhesion promoter. I've never used adhesion promoter or flex additive before.

Re: Paint Question
Understood, I've painted a bunch of bikes (Harleys Mostly) the fairings are a bit flexible but not as much as the golf cart I think... None have cracked, some are over 10 years old with no problems, no flexible agents, but they are a little stiffer I think than the carts.... this was probably not helpful lol

Re: Paint Question
I removed the plastic body on my ez go to do body work and paint. I used a standard acrylic auto paint with no flex additive at all and have had no issues. That was over a year ago and it has no cracks or chipping.....and I have bumped it pretty hard a couple of times. I would not hesitate to do it the same way again.

Re: Paint Question
Well it looks like its going to be a while before I can paint. Its rained here (New Orleans) everyday for the last week or two, and there doesn't seem to be any day in the next 10 days when rain isn't called for. My plan is to prep the body, which is already done. I degreased and wet sanded the body with 2000 grit paper. Everywhere there were decals is now smooth. Before primer, I'll degrease again, dry and tac. Then adhesion promoter, primer (probably 2 coats) with wet sanding between coats. Then base color, at least 2 coats. Then clear with medium activator, at least 4 coats with wet sanding between coats. Hopefully this produces a good result.
Kind of a different topic, but what would be best for painting the canopy? I was looking at the truck bed coating, like Rhino lining, or would regular Krylon fusion be just as good? If I had to guess, the truck coating would be more durable, but I'm not sure I'll like the textured look. |

Re: Paint Question
I used the Krylon Fusion satin black on mine. It has held up really good so far. Main thing is to prep it. I actually used it for everything that is black on the cart and it all still looks great.

Re: Paint Question
I used an adhesion promoter and SEM's Trim Black. It is made for somewhat flexible automotive trim. Took 2 cans. Not cheap but has stayed like new for 5 years now with little to no care.

Re: Paint Question
I have adhesion promoter and I bought the Rustoleum undercoating. I figured it was a flexible rubberized coating but with a smooth texture vs. the bedliner that has a rough texture. I plan to clean/ degrease, sand with 320, adhesion promoter and then undercoating. Fingers crossed it works.

Re: Paint Question
I have painted 5 golf carts now. Some with single stage automotive acrylic enamel ( i did clear coat them although not required) and some with base/clear automotive paint. All mine were body off paint jobs and I had to move the bodies around and take them on and off while finishing up the rebuilds. The bodies do flex quite a bit but I never experienced any cracking. I also have done all those tops in truck bed liner. Raptor Liner to be exact. Some were standard black and some were color matched to the cart body. I like the textured look and it hides a lot of minor flaws.
