clone into a 96 par car
Hey guys, I just picked up my first golf cart.
it came with no engine or drive clutch, was 4 stroke forward/reverse rearend I got a duromax engine and a drive clutch off a john deere gator got the engine mounted and it runs and drives. my problem is the factory engine was started with a starter generator and controlled by limit switches I don't have the generator is there a way to make something else work for a starter or get the duromax starter to work with the limit switches thanks Scott |

Here's a simple alternator - it requires a rectifier to finish it up. The rectifier is listed at the bottom of the page

Re: clone into a 96 par car
Shepard, thanks for the reply, the engine has a alternator built in to charge the battery
I currently have the electric start working off the key the problem is that in order to shift from forward to reverse I have to stop the engine-shift-restart the engine. I'm looking for a way to use the pedal start/stop |

It sounds like maybe your engine isn't idling low enough for the primary clutch to disengage. You should be able to shift from forward to reverse with the engine at idle, if not you need to adjust the idle lower or you need to raise the engagement RPM of the primary with a heavier spring/ lighter weights. |

Re: clone into a 96 par car
I was wondering about the clutch/idle
I can only get the idle down to about 1240 rpm I'm pretty sure the belt is not to tight, might be to loose the primary clutch is off a 2004 Gator hpx and could be worn out thanks though, you've given me info to work with |

Re: clone into a 96 par car
You need to get the idle down to around 1000 rpms

Re: clone into a 96 par car
The only way to use the cart "like a cart" with the start and stop with pedal, you need the starter generator. Without it you are forced to use the key switch starter like a car.
Most of these engines aren't designed to idle low. Most times the stock carb isn't designed to run low rpm and needs to be modified to work, ie jetting changes. A golf cart engine should be capable of idling below 1200 rpm but the carb may need some work to get there. The gator clutch may also be tuned differently than a, say Comet 780, which is designed for key start/stop. Stock golf cart clutches, and maybe Gators, are designed to run with the pedal feature. I have used golf cart clutches with big block engines, and the combo just doesn't work all that great. Always fighting the higher rpm and early take off etc. |

Re: clone into a 96 par car
Most clones you have to get the idle mix working, they like to cap them off or loctite the screw in on side of carb. The capped ones you can drill the cap out carefully the loctite ones you have to dremel a slot in the screw and heat it with a solder gun...is what I did then you can ebay a new screw and spring for it. When you richen up the idle you can get them to idle much slower. Mine would idle down to the comp release going off.
You can get a gen and mount it on there, you need one of the solenoids and you can't use a car one. But you need the pulley on the clutch or put one on the other side of the engine. |
