club car 1986-91
Hey guys, I have a Question? I have a club car kf82 flat head engine and the rod with though the case. I got this club car for free and I cant get a rebuilt engine because they need a core. I was wondering if i could do an engine swap to a newer engine. I found a cheap engine for 400 dollars and the engine I found is FE290 out of a club car. Would this work in my 1986-91?

Re: club car 1986-91
Some of the mounts are different IIRC. It's not as simple as bolting it in and going. Most guys here do a swap with a $250 clone motor from Harbor Freight that doubles your HP. If you have to fab up the mounts you might as well put in a more powerful motor.
Do you know what year the FE290 motor is? If it's a 1997 or newer it's a clockwise motor. From 1984-1996 the Club Cars were all counterclockwise. You could still use it, but your cart may then be faster in reverse than in forward. How bad is the damage to the case? When mine broke through it was just a small crack. I just JB welded it and others here have done likewise. There's a place in GA I believe that can remachine your crank and rod for a couple hundred bucks. I looked into it when my cart had a blown motor, but then I found another KF82 motor from a nearby member here and just swapped it in. |

I just talked to the guy and he said he believe it was out of a 93 club car but hes not sure. I wish I could JB weld it but 6 by 6 hole in the side of the case. I been calling around and even talk to a place in GA and they said if you have a core the engine will be cheaper but I cant side mine engine in because it has a hole.

If I asked him to give me the serial number, would that tell me the year that the engine was in?

I would think so, I'm sure someone here could find out. Lots of guys here have CC manuals.

The serial number of the cart the FE290 came out of would be a easier tell-tale sign to find out if it's CC or CCW!
Unless of coarse the cart is a 1996... then it kind of a cr*p shoot! |

Re: club car 1986-91
Since the engine is out, there may be a tag on the back side of the engine fan shroud,
Here's my tag... note the manufacture date 0606 (June of 2006) |

Re: club car 1986-91
I just called him and hes said the tag is not on there, he gave me these numbers, FE290D-DS05 and SE290D078364. I google the FE290D-DS05 and i looked at a comment and someone said, In 92 & 93 the engine had a black plastic plug back by where the oil sensor plugs in. They had a problem with this plastic plug blowing out and oil goes all over everything.... Is there any other way I can find out what year this engine is because i need a CCW engine.

Re: club car 1986-91
I don't know what else to tell you, except...
If the guy doesn't know what year the of cart was that it came out of, or if it's CW or CCW, $400.00 is too much for the lack of info on it, $200.00 would be more a little more reasonable in my opinion. The only other way that I know of is (which kinda' isn't an option) to run it to check the rotation. I know... this doesn't help! I'd say keep shopping, CCW FE290's are out there! |
