Default KF92 engine will not get up to speed

Hi, '91 DS , KF 82. cart starts good , runs at slow speed , but will not speed up. I noticed that the fuel filter ( fairly new) was not getting much fuel in it. I switched fuel pump with a new one and same result.Any suggestions? thanks ! not sure if the rev limiter has anything to do with it ?! Thanks in advance !!

I bought a well used 86 with the KF82 flathead this spring. The throttle shaft in the carburator had sticky spots, and didn't move freely (wouldn't open up all the way under the cable spring pressure). Cleaned that out while I had the carb apart for other needed cleaning. Could also be main jet partially plugged and needs cleaning.

Thanks, I'll try that . I have a tendency to think of a "dirty" carb .

Before you tear into the carb, step on the pedal and see if the throttle shaft at the top of the carb is getting pulled open. Governor spring pressure in a cable linkage at the bottom front of the engine should be trying to pull the throttle plate wide open, and as cart speed increases, the axle speed governor linkage will then start pushing it closed.

I'll see if I can find another thread on here that shows the system and adjustments.

Here's a link to the governor linkage adjustment from axle to engine...

This thread has some info and pictures of what the linkages are supposed to look like...

I second governor adjustment. The governor rod and linkage system on those is a pain to get set up right. Real pain. Find the service manual and set everything to factory spec. People screw with them to try and get them to go faster and usually create more problems than they solve, and can never get it back to where it started.

That said, these aren’t particularly fast motors/carts. 12-14mph is standard. You can get them up to about 17-18mph and that’s about it. These engines don’t particularly like to be revved very high

Thanks Scooter and CP , for the tips. You are correct , the KF92 will not provide alot of speed , but my cart will not increase RPM above an idle.I appreciate all advice .

First thing is first. These carts do not idle. Are you sure it is running at all? I believe it’s just the starter/gen turning the engine over

As trig said, did this start all the sudden or is this a cart you bought this way?

Fig.7-14: Just pop the governor rod (3) off at the throttle plate lever (4) just as a test and see if it gets up and goes. If it does then your governor is out of adjustment.

Here's the factory adjustment instructions:
