can a 440 run backwards?

Can a 440 snowmobile engine run backwards? I put it in my ezgo, when it starts it is running the cart backwards. Need to know if i can make it run opposite way and how?! Thanks...

Was the engine running "forwards" BEFORE you put it in the cart? Did you check the clutch rotation in the sled and compare to clutch rotation in your cart BEFORE you started the project?

Main question - "in my ezgo" - what year, model and style ezgo do you have here?

I know nothing about snowmobile engines.....I live where it never snows.
But everyone knows a 2 stroke motor can be run in reverse. Evidenced by many years of 2 stroke golf carts. And 4 strokes can not run backwards. So if you have a 4 stroke ..... turn your seat around!

yeah i've got a sled motor and it runs one way.. at least the older ones do... mine i had to mount the engine somewhat over/behind the rear axle for it to spin the rear end the right way...

The trick to making a 2-stroke run backwards is the timing.On carts they run at or within 2degrees of TDC.If you set the timing as you would on a sled(could be 12-degrees Advanced for ex..)it will not run in reverse,because when it turns the other direction it will be firing 12-degrees retarded.Sleds such as Ski-Doo actually shut-down and refire in a pre-set timing for reverse,others have a transmission.As far as rotation,when the engine is running,and you are looking at the clutch,it will turn Counter-Clockwise.This is Standard-Rotation.Club-Car used Reverse-Rotation for a long-time.The best set-up is to install a 89-94 Marathon 4-stroke Trans-Axle and that will give you Reverse,and its' a bolt-in!Then just make new mounts for the motor and mount the shifter.Hope this helps.

You can try it,I would watch the engine-temp until you get some time on it,it may run hot,due to the retarded-timing.You may have to re-jet it as well.Keep in mind it will lack power compared to stock-timing.
