Need help with painting the top of my Precedent
Ok, So I am painting my 08 precedent and want to paint the top to match the rest of the body. I have read the sticky on painting plastics and it was helpful, but my issue is that my top has some significant scratches/gouges on the front edge and needs a lot of work. What would be the best filler to use and also do I need to sand down the texture on the roof or can I use a filling primer and then sand it smooth?
What would be the best grit count for initial sanding and so forth? |

Re: Need help with painting the top of my Precedent
So the issue with painting the newer tops is that they do contain some nylon in them and you could have issues with adhesion. With that said if you do want to continue then I would scuff the area with around 240 grit, clean very good with wax and grease remover to try and remove the mold release and then spray some adhesion promoter on the area. Continue with your body work then cand smooth. Then you can scuff the rest of the top with maroon scotchbrite, clean really well with wax and grease remover and then apply the adhesion promoter. At that point you could spray on some high build primer and then sand smoooth to cover the texture and body work. At that point you can clean again and then apply your paint.
Like I said sometimes painting these things can be a crap shoot with adhesion so be aware of that before you go into this project. I have painted some with good results and a few that I just couldn't get good adhesion for some reason. |
