DPI Charger Safety
Got a new one from Scottyb in February after my old one would continue to charge and boil water out of batteries (42v). Works perfectly.
Since I would like to leave charger plugged while away taking advantage of its 'float' capabilities...maybe up to three weeks, what are the risks? The cart is in my garage in the desert and I would expect temps, mostly in the low 100's and maybe occasionally 110 or so during daytime and low 80's at night. Due to the heat this time of year and potential water loss in batts due to evaporation is there a safety mechanism built into this charger? I don't want the charger to continue charge and 'cook' battery water likely old one did...without stopping charging. |

Re: DPI Charger Safety
Although the float voltage should be below gassing voltage (keeping water consumption low) , no, it does not have any way to check your battery water.

Re: DPI Charger Safety
My question is not about the charger recognizing water level, but the state of charge level...telling itself something is not "right" whether it relates to water, a bad cell or two...I just don't want it to continue to charge when there are issues, such as water level, without daily monitoring. I have had issues, relating to low water, wherein the charger continued to run for 16 hours, or more, requiring the addition of more than a gallon of water during the same timeframe. That is why it was replaced.
Just asking about safety mechanism...don't want to burn the garage down while away for three weeks. How 'smart' is the DPI? When things are 'F' up will it just go to sleep until I can get there are review status? Or will it cook the batteries? |

Re: DPI Charger Safety
The DPI Accusense float charges at a regulated voltage of 2.21VPC, which is well below the gassing stage. However- desert uninsulated garage temperature is closer to 120-135 degrees which is way above any recommended ambient charging temperature. This would be my concern, charging above 100 degrees simply because charging does raise the battery temperature which can lead to accelerated evaporation in a dry environment.
If you are leaving for 3-4 weeks I may be tempted to recharge before you leave and when you return just because of the extreme temps |
