G1 Replace 2 stroke rearend w/ 4 stroke
All new to the Golf Cart world.
I have what I believe is a G1. Now that I have info learned on this site I can check serial numbers. I feel it is a G1 for it is the older looking body style and originally a 2 stroke. It has been converted to a 5 horse Briggs which I yanked an installing a 6.5 Subaru I have. I understand originally the 2 stroke rearends did not have reverse for the 2 stroke could just run backwards when needed. So with my conversion I am thinking to just finding a 4 stroke rearend so I can shift to reverse? Am I right in thinking this can happen? Also the rearend in my cart has a small shaft sticking up that looks like it could be a shift lever of some sort? Does any one have pictures of the 2 different rearends ( 2 stroke vs 4 stroke) I am thinking this shaft poking up may be a reverse shifting lever once I figure out if it is a up/down movement of right/left ? |

The shaft sticking vertically out of the rearend is the governor shaft.
Contact "slonomo". He has done this swap. |

Re: G1 Replace 2 stroke rearend w/ 4 stroke
I just installed a G2 rear end in my G1 after I dropped in a clone motor. You can view my thread in the Big Block section. "My G1 clone build". Slonomo also did this to his G1...plenty of good info in his thread.

Re: G1 Replace 2 stroke rearend w/ 4 stroke
Very simply put, as the wheel speed increases, the weights, number 3, on the internal portion of the governor move outward due to centrifugal force. This causes the vertical shaft, number 8, to rotate and close the throttle down.
