Red face 1980 EZ Go 4 wheeler

Hi all

I,m Keith:
I live in Willows Ca. I just brought home a 1980 ez go. I don't know the model yet, but there is an 80 in the serial number, and the motor has a 10 - 7 - 79 printed on the case. It's in great physical condition, just doesn't run.. yet. I'm starting with the charger today and going from there. anyhow, nice to be on board.

Hi again:

The charger seems to be dead. (Lester Electric). I don't know yet if it only works while a load is on it. but AC is present on the controller board. fuse is good. too hot to fool around with it anymore today. back to it tonight

Thanks

After some snooping around the site, I learned that my charger needs to see at least 28 volts from the batteries in order to charge. So.. I'm charging the first two. the batteries look great, the cable set looks pretty poor. sometime tomorrow I'll know the tale.

Red face Re: 1980 EZ Go 4 wheeler

Thanks so much!

Well.. a cooler day here The batteries seem to be charging. Though they look like new, they are dated from 5/05 to 7/06 The cable set looks pretty bad in 4 or 5 examples. I'm taking them to the local autoparts store to find a match after lunch. So far, I'm having a good time More to follow.

You can bypass the relay in the charger and charge a dead battery set. Monitor them and stop charging before they reach full voltage and hook up the relay so it can control voltage

Thumbs up Re: 1980 EZ Go 4 wheeler

OhMan!

Thanks for the tip Sir. As of 5 minutes ago, I got 34.3 volts at the charge plug. I plugged in the lestronic 2 charger. After a couple seconds I heard the relay click. Its now charging! WOOT! I was able to move it under power forward and reverse.
I'm going to kill the charger over night and check it tomorrow morning.
Maybe I am over the hump. I also disconnected a botched headlight job. It might be the root cause of the failure.

If you don't have a 6 vdc charger, you can leave two of the batteries in series and charge them with a standard 12 vdc auto charger. I usually put it on the 2 amp trickle charge and let them charge over night. Seems to bring them back to life a little more gracefully without overcharging or causing excessive heat to the batteries. Sounds like you got it whiped pretty good now. If you can have the batteries load tested to see if they are capable of handling the current load of the cart. Age can be a factor, but I just got a 2000 cart thathad the original batteries in it. They were completely dead ( 0 voltage). I charged them with 3 12 vdc chargers on 2 amps for a day and when they got up to 35 vdc, hooked the charger to them. They are working great and load test strong, even with 90 degree heat here recently. Of course, they are Trojan 105's. Hard to kill those puppies.

Talking Re: 1980 EZ Go 4 wheeler

Thanks !
I got it all going last night. The lestronic charger is on the job now.
I need to lift this little guy up to inspect the underside. I still need to go over the resistors and look over the throttle pot. All that wiring is all filthy.
I have pic,s but haven't figured out uploading just yet.
