Club Car DS rear coil over conversion?
I have a 93' Club Car DS that I installed a Jakes Long travel kit on the front and heavy duty 4 leaf springs on the rear. The front rides great but the rear rides like a brick. To my knowledge there is not a rear coil over kit available for this cart. This is what I was thinking might work but I'm intrested in other opinions. If I were to remove the rear shackles (I made a set 10 1/2" eye to eye) and replaced them with some small coil over shocks like you would find on the front of an older snowmobile would that work? I know the shackels are offset but I could fabricate brackets to mount the shocks. If the coil overs had 3-4" of travel it would cushion the ride before the stiff leaf springs started to move. Any thoughts on why this would not work?

Re: Club Car DS rear coil over conversion?
Sounds interesting. I'm not sure I completely understood. Are you planning to have the coil overs in place of the shackles?
I too have been thinking about updated rear suspension for a pre 97 CC. I find myself laying under the cart sometimes to look up and think about it. I was tinkering with the idea of a heim joint in place of the snubber, completely swapping the leafs for coil overs, and fabbing some kind of trailing arm of sorts to help control side to side movement of the swing arm/engine cradle. |

Sounds very do-able. My thoughts are cut the leaf springs right behind the axle mount and use the front half as trailing arms, replace the stock shocks with coilovers and add a drag link to keep the rear centered. Might have to beef up the shock mounts a little. Now I wish I had something to try it on!
Could even use air shocks but need to have seperate air stems so they don't bleed from one to the other with one person on it. Who ever does it post pics!!!! |

Re: Club Car DS rear coil over conversion?
I see what you're saying scotty but I,m not sure the engine cradle assy is built heavy enough to be used as a full swing arm like the Yamaha if you replaced the front rubber with a heim joint. If I were to do it I would use the old springs and cut and use them as trailing arms and sell the new HD springs for some offset cash for the cost of the coilovers.
I think the ride would improve 100% Anyway, Back to the original question, coilovers at the rear of the leaf will work but will need to have half the spring rate as a set that is mounted at the axle due to the reduced leverage the rear will put on them that far back. |

Very cool idea you guys are passing around with cutting the leafs to be used as trailing arms. I'm a supsension rookie so anybody have any tips on a coil over that would fit this bill? I've been looking at used factory Rhino stuff on Ebay.

That bajaready stuff looks nice.
I just measured the stock shocks on my Dads Rhino. They're about 15' overall length and the coils are about 3" total outside diameter. |
