Crf 450 motor in my golf cart,, need gear ratio issue help.. speed to to slow
I forgot how small the tires were.. i calculated ... well lets just say with the motor at the rev limiter my top speed is 12 mph..in 5th gear.. Who has taken the rear end out on one of these? what gear ratio is it.. Can i get a 6-1 Hi speed rear end kit-- i only see them listed from 1988 and up. the front sproket on the motor is a 13 tooth.. the rear welded on sprocket is also a 13 tooth.. The rear end seems like a 13:1 reduction drive-- coupled with small tires makes me not move and not happy:) I ordered up a 28 tooth front sproket ( from the rear end of a yamaha kids quad-- 520 chain size ) and a 12 tooth Rear sproket.. I will have to weld a spacer / adapter so the 28 engine sprocket clears the ignition case on the dirtbike motor.. so here is my question.. Should i just turn the motor 90 degrees to the right and put a go cart axle on it? ifso anybody got one cheap? |

Hi kevingraehl. I might beable to shine some light on your project.
I was once in the exact same situation as you, when i was building my skidoo powered cart. I had a parcar/harley rear just like you, and tryin to run it using a chain setup and chain clutch on the engine.. It was wayyy too high of a ratio. Even if you had it somewhat working, that chain would be goin way too fast, the original rear input would spin like 4000rpm at like 20mph. i ended up using a ezgo rearend with reverse, and the original skidoo clutch, and got the speed that i wanted, but for your situation Your best bet, would be to run a straight axle and mount the motor facing foward. Dont even try spending time using that old rearend, you just will never get the speed you want out of it. You should easily beable to get some nice burnouts with that engine That is also the most killer sleeper cart once you get it going.. lol should be cool to see how it works out |
