1975 Harley Davidson D4 Golfcart, motor rebuild help!
Hi everyone. New to posting here but I've been browsing over the forums for a few months now. Okay on to the Golf Cart, Basically what has happened is my friend was driving it and instead of letting it come to a complete stop when switching it from reverse to forward he did it at about 5 mph. Now all it will do is crank and occasionally back fire.
I work on cars so the first thing that came to mind is the timing was off, which is true. The lobe is all the way at the bottom away from the points when the piston is at top dead center. So, took the motor out of the golf cart and I got it almost all the way tore apart and I have not found anything that strikes me as obvious as of to how the timing could be so far off. There is no pins sheered or anything. I have noticed that the piston has noticeable play ( not side to side, but up and down in the cylinder. ) Does anyone know what could of caused this? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Charlie |

you have a three piece crankshaft. doing reverse drops will separate it.

Thanks for the info! Should the keyways be lined up on the crankshaft? I just finished tearing it apart it also broke a ring and spit out the exhaust side, Cracked the piston.

Re: 1975 Harley Davidson D4 Golfcart, motor rebuild help!
The crank shaft on the flywheel side has slipped or the key way on the flywheel has sheared. Probably the flywheel key way has slipped. The key way on the shaft should be at top dead center. Check this after the fly wheel has been removed even if the key has stripped. That will cause the timing to be that far off! also the piston/rod assembly should not have up and down play.
