Continuous though? many of these large amp draws will be while under 100% throttle and for longer than a few seconds.

The fact that so many have bms shutdowns and have to lower the power ceiling on the controllers to match or even be below the batteries advertised specs does not support this.

And no, not continuous but pulse.

Motor current cannot easily be related to battery current in these controllers. We are not talking about BMS shutdown now, we’re explaining why controller RATED current should be higher than the available maximum battery current as the question was asked as to why you should have a controller rated above what your battery can supply.

When turning the controller down to stop battery shutdown, your manipulating the INPUT current. The OUTPUT current, or motor current can still be twice as high as the input. So if you have a 150A supply, your controller should be rated at at least 300A so as not to be the limiting factor.

As Volt_Ampare already stated, this is a very simplified explanation.
