2008 precedent gas
Good afternoon
I am looking for testing procedure's for a 2008 precedent gas cart . New battery in cart but with volt meter connected to fully charged battery there is 13 volts when i start the cart the voltage drops until it starts but then only goes back to 13 volts and ther is no indication it is charging. I would like to narrow down the issue and not just throw parts at it . We are over 80 moles to the nearest dealer for parts |

Re: 2008 precedent gas
Ground the DF terminal on the starter generator and run the engine at full throttle and see if the charge voltage goes up over about 16-17v. DF terminal is the small one on top or the side with the yellow wire going to it. Not easy to get to on the precedents, but just clip an alligator lead to it and clip that to frame ground.
If that makes it charge then you can usually blame the voltage regulator. It should be bolted to the tray near the battery and solenoid. It's in a place that is prone to corrosion, so if the outer housing of the regulator looks badly corroded that's usually a sign that it's the problem. Has a three wire plug with a red, black, and yellow wire going to it. I think the wire colors from the plug to the regulator are different Like red, blue, green, but doesn't matter much what they are on the regulator side. Yellow wire at the regulator plug is the same as the yellow as the starter gen, so you can back probe that with a paper clip and ground it to test the same way as before. The regulator has to have a good ground, so check the black wire for continuity to the chassis or to battery -. Also check that the regulator is getting 12v+ on the red wire when the solenoid is engaged. If those check out good replace the regulator. If grounding the DF post does not make the starter generator begin charging, it will need to be removed for repair or replacement. Double check all wire connections on the S/G for any corrosion or rust and make sure none are loose. Usually an SG that will not produce any voltage will have worn or stuck brushes, or an open or shorted field coil. |
