Minimum voltage for charger to turn on?
1995 48 volt w/alltrax axe controller
New controller installed and cart worked fine when batteries were at full charge. Over the winter the batteries dropped very low, about 2 volts each. I've been trickle charging with car charger since the club charger would not work. Tried the charger on another cart and works fine with the batteries already at about 47 volts. The batteries on my cart now are at about 35 volts and the charger will only kick on for 1-2 seconds and shut off. Does anyone know the minimum volt needed for charger to kick on? |

Re: Minimum voltage for charger to turn on?
. . . around 38v seems to be the "magic" number . . .

Re: Minimum voltage for charger to turn on?
Your batteries are probably badly sulphated if you let them get down to 2V each. That is the worst thing you can do to them. You need to keep them charged when you are away.

Re: Minimum voltage for charger to turn on?
Jumper the charger relay and charge them NOW. They are dying.
It may be too late but a proper charge is akin to CPR for your batteries right now. |

Re: Minimum voltage for charger to turn on?
Thanks bgw members for the replies...
I've managed to charge each battery back up to 7.1-7.2ish with my car charger. That was after I used about 3 liters of distilled water to top up the 24 cells. Checked the voltage the next day and there dropping down to the high 5's to about 6.5 volts so I threw the charger back on each battery for an about an hour each. After going through each battery and about 3-4 hours later, each battery is reading 6.8 to 7.2 volts totalling over 40 volts for all 6 batteries. Decided to try proper charger and now I'm getting it to turn on for only about 1-2 seconds and shuts itself down. In that quick second the needle jumps up in the gauge and charger hums... but thats it and then shuts down. Is this still a battery problem? I'm starting to think something else has gone wrong :( |

Re: Minimum voltage for charger to turn on?
I would try bypassing the charger relay. A short piece of 12g wire with male spade ends works well. Charge them up to 50v as a pack, then remove the jumper and try the charger in normal operation. It sounds like you may have abused these batteries. They may come back partially functional or not at all.

Re: Minimum voltage for charger to turn on?
Thanks guys for all the input.. I believe now my batteries have gone too low. Tried a 6 volt load test on each battery after charging them to 7-7.5 volts each and the load gauge dropped right down to below 4 within the first 2 seconds of the 10 sec. test. Which is probably the reason the cart charger only comes on for a second or 2 and shuts off. I think I will be looking for some new batteries and this time... its getting plugged in after every use!
