Single use emergency: pull 12v off your 48v pack. Multiple winch use? You must spend money, and must buy a 12v battery. Amount of money is proportional to the number of amp hours you demand. I bet a small lawn tractor battery would do 2 emergency pulls. 100 feet up a hill? Forget about it. Pull yourself out of a 6" mud/snow hole? You betcha. What do I use? The largest possible marine battery that I could stuff under the back seat because I run a snow plow winch, and pull small trees out of the ground with the winch. I paid $180 for the privilege.

I'm bad at math. Tell me how to get 12V from an array of 8V batteries.

I've seen these winches before, but never used one. Powered by a cordless drill, so not that big to bring along. Certainly smaller than an automotive 12v battery. Looks like it's listed at 750 lbs pull, but could be doubled or more with the right rigging.

I have a 2" receiver mounted on the front and rear of my 03 DS with a Warn 2500 mounted to a plate with a 2". I have a Interstate SLA1156 Battery mounted in a ammo can to power it. Its the smallest battery you can get to use in this application.

Sounds like exactly what I’m after. Can I see a pic of the front of the cart? Where’d you get the hitch mount plate?

If you "do not anticipate using it hardly at all", why bother with an electric winch?

I pack a cable come-a-long in my cart when I'm at risk of getting stuck. Getting stuck for me has usually been getting high centered driving over a downed tree or loosing traction on some wet / muddy ground. I was once stuck without my "hand winch" and used the green ratchet strap in the photo below to pull myself out ... and avoided the 1/2 mile walk back to the barn to get the hand winch.

Pictured below is my "unstuck kit" that I pack in my cart. I too was thinking of a winch but it seems like a big investment for something that I would not use very often ... and I already had a few come-alongs sitting on the shelf.
