Default 2016 rxv Intermittent clunk/thump at start

2016 ezgo rxv with upgraded controller and lithium battery.

Press pedal, there is a clunk or thump at start. Like someone hit you from behind. It is intermittent, happens maybe 5 times in a four hour golf round. Doesn’t matter if we are in reverse or forward. Swapped out the brake, no change.

Any ideas as to what to look at ?

OP do you have a volt meter with needle like pin probes? Post 2 in the link has the pdf for the trouble shooting guide. Check all the connections are tight and not corroded, battery ones first then in the harness. Mine bucked a couple times last week, loose battery wire getting hot and started melting the lead around the bolt. Good luck.

Check the spring and shackle bushings.

Rear end housing is turning inside the U-bolts allowing the motor to hit the body and back of the batteries. It will clunk on start or on braking. It will get aggressively worse if not addressed. Tighten the u-bolts or spot weld if necessary.

Not the shock. Axle location pins may have broken off the axle and allowing it to spin in the u-bolts. Make sure those are snug.

Agreed. That's what I was talking about. I have seen cases where the lift kit installer would cut those pins off because they had trouble lining up on assembly. That works for a while under light to normal use but in time as the spring to housing u-bolts settle in and loosen up will begin to turn inside the u-bolts. Especially on panic braking when the torque will allow the whole rear end housing to turn and slam the top of the motor into the back of the batteries. That can do serious damage to the top of the motor and the electrical connections, and in the case of a top mounted speed sensor, can bust it. You can look under the rear at those mounts and see a shiny ring where the turning has cut into the rear end axle tubes when turning. With pins gone, thats what I had to weld to repair.

No. I'm referring to the bushings at the front of the spring and the shackles at the rear of the spring. They can wear out and cause metal to metal contact. You will have to jack the cart up to see the ones at the front of the springs.

Checked all of the shackles and axle pins, all looks good and i made sure everything was tight. Played a round of golf after and it did the clunk once.

It’s almost like the brake is not releasing soon enough, like the motor is starting to turn and the brake hasn’t released yet.

No errors hooking the controller up to a handheld scanner.
