Welcome Rob, Nice looking cart for the $. I dunno if I would try converting it to gas? But as a runner it looks like a bargain!

A Melex primer:

A Brief History of Melex Golf Carts

Melex golf cars were founded in 1970 at Mielec, Poland and were introduced into the US market in June of 1971. Their first carts were almost identical clones of the popular E-Z-GO which was US made. The first models were the 102 three wheel and 202 four wheel. These were manufactured until 1974. Models 112 and 212 were introduced in 1975. The 112 being a three wheel model and the 212 a four wheel. These had the brake drum mounted on the motor until serial number 155058. The all metal body 152 and 252 models came out in 1985. The 152 being three wheel and the 252 a four wheel. The model 412 was the first Melex cart with a plastic body. These were introduced in 1985 and the early ones had just plastic rear fenders and dash. The model 412 was the first to use the US made Dana differential and the GE electric motor. Melex is known for being the first golf cart manufacturer to use a modern solid state motor speed controller which they introduced to their line in 1986. Some model 152s and 252s had them and all model 412s came with electronic speed control. The all plastic model 512E came out in 1992. The "E" being for electric. This was followed by the gasoline model 512G in 1994. It came with a 16 cubic inch engine. The engines were painted black. In 1996 they introduced the 18 cubic inch engine which was painted red. In 1998 the models 625E and 625G were introduced. These carts were assembled in the US with US bodies and electrics, etc. The frames and suspension were shipped from Poland. These cart bodies were all plastic as well. In November of 2000 the US assets of the Melex Corporation were purchased by one of the Melex U.S. distributors, Nagy Golf & Turf of Mesa, Arizona.

Information supplied by Andy Kielawa who was with Melex for a great number of years and now is with the Fore-Par Group. Additional information provided by Izabela Zelazko of the Melex factory in Poland where they still make a wide range of carts. Everyone failed to mention that although they are clones of an early Ezgo...... they are a Polish clone ... so none of the ezgo parts fit

Sorry, mrbizgolf, that info was lifted from another site, I believe it was vintagegolfcars.com.

Either way, I am planning on eventually converting it to gas and lifting it with fully custom suspension anyway, so parts wont matter that much as it works great as it sits.

Melex IS NOT out of buisness. You are right though, parts are hard to find. Back in the 70's, early 80's the Melex carts were ezgo clones. Even cloned an ezgo factory flaw. Some of The early Melex parts would interchange but none of the later melex parts will interchange. I know, I had to buy parts for the POS melex I own. The cart you have is not an ezgo clone. I don't know what that is. Melex's website is http://www.melex.com.au/

I have a Melex 252. I really like the body style but modification parts are hard to find. Essential parts such as accelerator switch parts and motors are still available. They can still be maintained but hard to upgrade.

I completely rebuilt my acelerator switch and contacts, and used 4 gauge wire to do it with. It runs great now. I am thinking about selling it or parting it out now that I am trying to get a newer cart.

Long story short, you can keep them running but you need to be hand in the shop to do it.

I have an old Melex 3 wheel electric. it is a real dog but it didn't cost but $35.00 with charger. I also have an old Honda 450 engine that I will adapt to fit when I get a gas rear end or decide how to adapt the electric rear end for a sprocket.

I have 2 old 212's from 1980. They look great when spruced up a bit, but are a nightmare to maintain as you can't get the parts easily. You just have to fab stuff yourself if you can. Electrics are pretty straightforward though, as long as your motor is in good shape.
