1988 Club Car Madjax 6" lift big problems
Installing a MadJax (MJFX) 6" lift in my 1988 Club Car.
The front suspension went fine. Rear has been nothing but trouble. First, Can't get the leaf spring bolts out (gonna to have to grind the bolts off). Second, the shock absorber adapter plate doesn't work. The kit gave me a rear leaf spring top plate that is flat, no way to mount the shock. The lower part of the stock shock bolts on sideways, and the plate looks like it was made for a shock that bolts straight down through a hole drilled in the plate. Useless top brackets they gave me: Factory stock shock orientation: Now what do I do? Did they give me a kit for the wrong year cart or something? And with the 6"lift do I need to modify the front of the frame at all: |

Thanks for the tip.
Didn't know they had new shocks that would fit. I just emailed Dave to see if he can help me. Also, you mentioned U-bolts. What would I need new U-bolts for? The kit did come with new U-bolts. |

Actually... you can use the shock bracket, and reuse your original shocks!
I remember reading about others that had pre-91 DS's, you have to bend the shock bracket eyelet at a 90 degree angle for older style shocks! As for the front of the engine pan? No, you don't "have to" modify it if you don't want! However... I would suggest getting a Snubber for it though! Snubber1.jpg Snubber 3.jpg |

Tell me about this Snubber.
Where can I get one? I assume it would just bolt on? Or would I have to fabricate one? |

Re: 1988 Club Car Madjax 6" lift big problems
The snubber can pretty much be gotten anywhere. They're just a rubber bushing. No bolting required.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...ubber&_sacat=0 When I put my 6" lift on my 1987 cart (same setup as yours), my rear shocks mounted on the stock studs, and they just included shock extenders in order for the top of the shock to reach the top mounting point. |

My shock extenders looked like this. They just mounted on the top of each shock.

Re: 1988 Club Car Madjax 6" lift big problems
How does the Snubber stay in place if it is not bolted on?
Those shock extenders are cool, but would not work in my case. The plates that ride on top of the leaf spring pack do not allow me to bolt the bottom shock on. |

Re: 1988 Club Car Madjax 6" lift big problems
Okay... I'll go into detail,
The snubber and snubber bracket are 2 different things! unbolt the snubber bracket from the engine pan mount, slide the yellow rubber snubber onto the bracket, and remount the bracket (with rubber snubber) to the engine pan! It won't go anywhere! The shock mount/U bolt bracket... Without using extenders... You need to BEND the stud shock eyelet up 90 degrees on the NEW plate, get a bolt and lock nut, and mount the bottom of your existing shock into the bent eyelet! It's pretty standard for older DS's, and I'm kind of surprised that none of the instructions (Jake's, Madjax, or All Sports) show that anymore! because that's the way I've always remembered it! |
