How far can you over juice the controller???
I have a 2004 TXT Series (non PDS or DCS) and was curious if I could add an extra battery or maybe two. I never go up hills if that matters much. I know electronics are always made with a margin and wanted to know what people have gotten away with in the past. For instance most 12v circuits can take up to 16-18 volts input without damage for a reasonable amount of time. So I am guessing 36volt controller may be able to be pushed up to 40 to 48 volts if you don't drive for hours.
Anyone actually try to push one to the limit before??? I plan to get an Alltrax or something similar eventually this would be a temporary situation. |

Re: How far can you over juice the controller???
I'm sure your theory is sound but from what we see it has no practical application.... one problem is the inherent over-voltages already present in any DC system. For example lets say I have a 48v system. The charger cut off voltage is between 58-63v. Most aftermarket controllers have over-voltage protection set at 60v. They will run with up to that much voltage but! ~ I don't think you can get away with it for very long at all... especially on a stock controller from what I hear.... If somebody else has different results I'm sure they will post so.

Re: How far can you over juice the controller???
In all the years I have been paying attention to this stuff, the results I remember was that SOME carts handled 42v on a 36v controller for a while, but none of them handled 48v to a 36v controller. Remember, if you up the voltage you gotta up the charger capacity too.

If your 36V controller is 400 amps, will it handle 42 volts?

I figured it could not go too far. I dod have a charger that will do 36 or 48 volts.

Re: How far can you over juice the controller???
A controller will usually handle 6v (20%) above it's rated maximum without issues. The problem you face is that a 36v cart starts out with fully charged batteries at just under 39v which is already 3v above the max rating. Adding an additional 6v battery would push this past it's limit and as ScottyB says the magic smoke is released.
