For the JDL404AH, it must go in the negative lead of the battery and have an isolated 12v power supply.

It is all in the manual pdf for it.

The write-up I posted looks like its pretty simple. You have the head unit and a 1000 amp 75mv shunt (looks like the shunt is about the size of a large fuse). The shunt is connected to the negative terminal of the 48 volt pack in my case and the negative lead that was connected to the pack is now connected to the other large terminal on the shunt.

To connect to the head unit you will need 12v positive and negative from an aux battery, a small 48 volt sensing lead from the 48 volt positive terminal on the pack and two sensing leads from the shunt…..one on the battery side and one on the main lead side.

There is a good schematic in the pdf.

Most reducers are not isolated. All of the ones I have worked with have a common between the battery (-) and the 12V output (-) so they will not properly power a meter that demands an isolated power supply.

I am planning to use an isolated deep cycle 12v AGM for powering the meter and other aux items. That should work correct? I won't have a 48v to 12v power supply on the buggy.

Yes, it will work, but under no circumstances should you tie any of the battery terminals to the chassis or to each other. It should be completely floating/isolated system. Test is a DMM from each battery terminal to the chassis and each other, the voltage should always go to zero volts, if not figure it out.

Yes an isolated battery will work.

If you ever wondered what two 500 amp controllers and about 40HP of electric motors can pull out of a 48V FLA battery pack we may soon find out.

Amp Meter arrived today and shunt should be here tomorrow.

Just food for thought I installed an "analog" version in my cart last night. I was getting 100A peak on take off and 50-60amps just running on flat road. It also explains why my cart was running so fast. , i.e. I did no have enough load on a series motor.
The analog version averages out the pulses, were as a digital version can might be noisy.

Interesting. Hard to believe you were not pulling any more than that with that monster controller and motor.

Are you saying you think the digital meter may be changing so rapidly that it will be difficult to read? Maybe I can change the sample rate.

Most of these meters do a bunch of averaging so it should be fine.
