Default Can I put 4-12 volt batteries in my Club Car instead of 6-8 volt?

I am needing new batteries for my '98 48volt cc and someone told me that I could use 4 12v instead of 6 8v...It would save me a considerable amount of money...any thoughts from those in the know? Thanks.
