Battery/Charger Issues with 2005 Precedent
Bought this cart 4 months ago
1. Ran fine for several weeks 2. Installed a radio and voltage reducer. Worked fine in short outing 3. Cart sat through some very cold weather (inside) for Texas and was not used for about 2 months. Charger was plugged in whole time, however. 4. Weather got warm, took cart out, went about half a round, charge got very low. 5. Took it home, plugged charger in 6. Went to start it the next weekend, nearly totally out of juice 7. Tested batteries with one of those bulb gizmos - several tested poorly 8. Replaced all 4 batteries, reset the OBC using instructions on this site 9. First time out, ran fine through 9 holes. Took if home, plugged charger in 10. Today, got it out of garage, went half a hole, noticed low juice, turned around barely made it home. 11. 3 of 4 batteries show 12 to 12.1 volts. The fourth shows 10.1. 46.7 accross the pack. 12. Noticed that when I plug charger in, needle goes all the way to the right for aout 10 seconds, then down to middle, then after about a minute nearly all the way to the left and continues there Any ideas? Bad Charger? |

Re: Battery/Charger Issues with 2005 Precedent
The readings you gave show 12. battery only 40 plus % charged, 12.1 only 50% charged, 10.1 completly DEAD ( IF THIS WAS SOURSE FOR VOLTAGE REDUCER ) may have drawn that battery down? ( needs switch to turn off when not needed ), total pack 46.7 is only 20% of total. If one or more batterys are defective or out of distilled water total pack ( 4 12 volt batterys in series ) charger will be unable to charge rest of batterys up correctly.
I assume ( I SURE HOPE SO ) you purchased golf cart batterys not auto or marine start batterys? ALSO THAT YOU CHARGED PACK AFTER INSTALLATION UNTIL C C POWER DRIVE CHARGER TURNED ITSELF OFF "BEFORE USING CART FOR FIRST TIME"? If you have a automatic auto type 12 volt charger I would charge each battery seperatly until charger turns off, NO NEED TO UNHOOK. If this does not bring batterys up to full charge 12 volt battery ( 12.73 each ) and pack total of ( 50.96 ) volts I would take your low tested batterys back to supplier and get different batterys as they should still be under warentee? |

Re: Battery/Charger Issues with 2005 Precedent
Thanks. As a first step, I will charge each one individually. What should the readings be when fully charged?
BTW, all have water, they are the correct batteries (purchased from Club Car dealer). And they were charged before use (well, at least I thought so - charger was plugged in overnight and had turned off). I understand that the voltage reducer can drain them, and will install a switch. But shouldn't the charger prevent them from draining? I have it plugged in to a charger 100% of time when not in use. I must have either a charger issue or a wiring issue between charger and batts, as the charger is not charging the pack. Suggestions on how to diagnose? |

Re: Battery/Charger Issues with 2005 Precedent
WITHOUT PROPER CHARGED, GOOD CONDITION BATTERYS, NOTHING ELECTRICAL CAN BE TESTED? ITS LIKE CHECKING A AUTO FUEL PUMP BECAUSE CAR IS OUT OF GAS? Check my previous post for full charge readings, individual as well as total pack voltage.
( Never assume ) new batterys are fully charged even when just gotten from cart dealer. As I stated before if one or more batterys are bad, defective, or discharged the CC charger can't bring pack nor bad batterys up to full charged. Record readings and POST on forum on each battery and total pack voltage after fully charging each battery with 12 volt auto type charger ( NOT 1-2 amp battery maintainer ). |

Re: Battery/Charger Issues with 2005 Precedent
Ive got maybe a similar problem 2007 Precedent -- live in indiana and it's getting pretty cold - had it charged and hadnt used it for a month or so but it's been plugged in -
Unplugged and recharged it 2 weeksa ago and drove fine for about 5 min. then ran out of juice. Put it back on the charger last week and after a few days went to back it out to move something and almost wouldnt move on flat surface - put back on charger a few days ago then came across this post and thought I might see if there was something I could check.... initial readings for batt. 1-4 are 12.2, 13.0, 13.3, 13.2 and total of 51.8 across system. |

Re: Battery/Charger Issues with 2005 Precedent
is the charger working? the 12.2 battery would bother me cause when you put it under load its more than likely going down to like 11 something which is dead.........make sure charger is working and then load test batteries .............pay good attention to that low one thats all it takes.............................

Re: Battery/Charger Issues with 2005 Precedent
I looked at the manual and did the check the first few things with across the prongs of the dc side, and making sure it clicked when it's supposed to....I guess i could maybe use a charger to charge the one low battery by itself? when I hook up the charger now it jumps to 10 then falls to 5 or so within about 15-20min. and then it shuts off within the hour like it's charged...and I can't fault it I guess with the numbers on the other batteries...kind of confusing. And some of the batteries that are readin around 13 if I test some of the cells in themn with a battery suck the water tester ? it reads not that great.....I'm going to have to study evidently !

Check negative terminal on each battery . . there will be a date code stamped into it . . . a letter and number . . . letter represents the month (a=Jan, b=Feb, etc) and number is year . . . A7 would be Jan 07 . . .
