Default Starter/generator issue? G2

My G2 has trouble getting turned over. I had the generator rebuilt, and no difference. Maybe the clutch is engaging too early?

To try to diagnose, I used the meter. At the battery, it is 12.5 at rest. When starting, it drops to 10.6 at the battery and at the starter. Once started it remains at around 11V. Never goes up or at least for the seconds that I can test it. Shouldn't it go above 13v when charging once started? Any thoughts? I was thinking bad connection, but having matching voltage at battery and starter kinda zips that. The battery isn't new.

As you rev the motor up, it should go up over 15 volts!! You may have a charging problem!!

For sure. But which part to suspect is where I get dumb. Can the solinoid cause this? Is there a voltage regulator external of the s/g?

Voltage regulator is on the driver side fender well-on the inside. Rare for those to fail as it should be the hitachi one. Never can tell though, worth checking out.

I did wonder what that was when we had the panels off. Now I know. I would expect to see voltage drop during cranking at different measuring points if it were a bad connection or cable break.

I did run the output test, but didn't energize with 12V on the red wire. So I need to regroup and do that again. The rebuilder swears that it worked properly on the test bench. And I am inclined to believe him.

Anyone have a diagram showing proper wiring of a G2 generator? I can't imagine I got it wrong, as it didn't seem like the wires could reach wrong places.

Good that you started a new thread.

One of the "STICKIES" at the beginning of these threads will lead you to wiring diagrams.

OK. More confused now. Took the wiring diagram, and saw that F1 was jumpered to A1. Well that's wrong. And A2 was going to battery negative. Wrong too! So I swapped them to match the wiring diagram. Tried it, and it will only barely turn the motor over backwards, regardless of the position of the gear selector. And it really warmed up the positive battery cable, which I took as a bad sign. So....what the!!

Try to determine if your starter generator is oem or aftermarket. I have seen posts here where NAPA replacement starter generators are not direct replacements and will run backwards, although I don't have personal experience of this. RAY

It was the starter generator. So much for using my local rebuild guy. Very disappointed.
