Default Taylor Dunn rear into dune buggy

Much to the displeasure of my wife I just picked up an old Taylor Dunn cart. Plan is to use the rear end and widen it for use in the VW. Cart isn't complete and seen better days.

Some of the other bits I have include a 72v forklift motor, 400a controller, contactor, VW pan, Mantaray II Kyote duggy body, and other randomness.

Thats a big project!

How do you plan to mate the fork lift motor to the taylor dunn differential ?

You might be better off with a different rear end. Possibly a suzuki samurai rear?

What controller do you have?

I have broken three axles on my 4x4, twin motor, 72 volt, 900 amp cart. Two front axles and one rear. The gears seem up to the task but the axles and bearings not so much. They just weren't engineered for 43.4 horsepower (thats my max power per axle). Your proposed build would be 38.6 horsepower max, I doubt the old taylor rear will like that very much.

Welcome to BGW, keep us posted if you go forward with the build.

Looks like I screwed up already. That was an intro post and it got moved.

Well really it won't be too much heavier than a regular cart. Especially the TD that I have. That **** thing is a full metal beast. I was just going to scrap the body but there is a ton of thick flat sheet metal on it.

This project is a fiberglass dune buggy. Actually a Mantaray II Kyote. Body was originally made by Dean Jefferies. He designed the body for The Monkeys movie "Head". He is also the guy that painted and painted and painted the original Shelby Cobra for Carroll Shelby.

This TD has the gear on the rear end. I would like to find the motor gear and start there. Nice part of the Ford rear is I can manipulate the gears to get speed I want.

I have a Curtis 1209 400a controller.

Generally this thing is going to be used to help promote a portion of my company that I call Solar4Soldiers. I install solar for a living and try to give back to my fellow Vets whenever possible. This is a program where I donate Solar systems to disabled Vets.

Taylor-Dunn's had 2 types of motor to diff styles. One was a chain, with alot of housing parts, the other was belt (actually 2 belts). Witch one is yours?

Must be the chain. I have a gear that attaches to the rear dif. Do you know what size chain it takes? I have no pieces to the gear housing.

I have to wait 3 more days until I can link pics from my photobucket

I had similar plans for a 1966 VW Bus but decided I was better off selling bus and using the money to buy a old electric golf cart and rebuilding it. I miss my bus but I have to say building the cart was the best choice. And my wife even likes my golf cart now!
