Default When hooking up solar panel + terminal spark

I am trying to hook up a solar panel to extend the distance of my golf cart. The course is just a little to far away. As a last step I am hooking the solar panel controller box on the positive terminal of the battery, but it sparks. That terminal does have the wire that goes to the starter on it but it is my further most positive terminal. Does anyone know what might be wrong?

Big spark or little spark?

What starter? Is this a gas cart and a 12 volt battery?

It is trying to pull a load. Hook the negative side last and before doing so, place a 60w or 75w incandescent bulb on the pack negative terminal and then take your negative cable and place it on the thread of the bulb. The bulb will illuminate and once the bulb dims out, remove the bulb and quickly connect the cable.

Just a wild guess but the output of your Solar Charge Controller isn't 48 volts to match your batteries. It would have to be a pretty big panel to output 48V.

What damage is done when you put 24v controller on 48v batteries?

Batteries should be fine, but that solar panel controller is likely fried.
