1981 Yamaha fuel flow from tank
My 1981 G1 Yamaha has been a faithful tool around my 3 acres. I run fresh non ethanol gas.
Problem: Fuel is not coming out of tank. New fuel filter is empty. I pressurized the tank and cannot fill the filter. What lines are inside the tank? How are they attached? Could one be detached? If yes, how do I re-attach it. Background: Here is what happened. I ran it out of fuel. Made the walk of shame back to my shop. Refilled the tank but it would not start. I towed the cart back and pressurized the tank. It filled the filter and it ran. I thought I was home free and back to normal. Two more uses of the trusty Yamaha and it will not start. Lifted the body and found no fuel in a fairly new fuel filter. What have i tried? Answer. 1. Tried pressurizing the tank with air and I cannot fill the fuel filter. 2. Changed the fuel filter to a new one. Prssurized the tank again. No fuel flowed into the filter. No fuel, no running engine. |

The pick up tube inside the tank is probably disconnected or broken. Also the plastic piece inside the grommet on top of the tank likes to crack and loose pressure. I would pull the entire pick up tube out and take a look at it.

Re: 1981 Yamaha fuel flow from tank
I ended up switching to a rubber hose in the tank when mine broke. I'm not real fond of tanks that have the pickup tube on top. That means the fuel pump needs to work against gravity to pull the fuel out of the tank. I prefer the types of tanks that have pickups at the bottom, like the G2/G9.

Re: 1981 Yamaha fuel flow from tank
Thanks guys. I need to figure out how to check inside the tank. Cannot find my borescope.
Even the manual is vague about how it is configured. |

I just noticed this website has a timer set for editing a post. I find that odd. What problem or problems are being prevented? I wanted to update my original post regarding the problem and final solution for future users. Odd, very odd.

Re: 1981 Yamaha fuel flow from tank
Had the same thing happen to my 1981 G1 when I ran it out of fuel, I ended up pressurizing the tank multiple times to get it going and it kept draining the filter, I then took the carburetor off and cleaned out the bowl and jets. It helped for a little while but I think what ended up fixing it was the vent on the top of the tank. It’s a little check valve and it was stuck, rusted to the little star washer that holds it in. I took it out and cleaned it up and everything worked fine after that. It’s going to be a process of elimination. But I hope these steps help you find the problem quicker.

Is this the valve? Checked it out again. Pressurized the tank but could not fill up the filter. Pulled the vent, it appears to look OK. Pulled the line that drops into the tank and it is stiff but not cracked. My frustration is figuring out how the fuel supply system is supposed. Does the fuel pump pull fuel by creating a vacuum? If so, how do you check the pump? Pulled the vent / check valve. How do you test it? |
