Here's the breakdown of your motor.

Did you remove the two screws (#9) that screw into the bearing retainer (#16)? I think those screws need to come out before you can pull it apart.

Thanks. I’m of course prepared to replace the brush assembly and bearing if necessary. If I just can get into it…

When those are gone the back plate pulls off, but if the bearing is rusted it may be seized to the plate and need some persuasion or some heat to get it to release. Then the armature goes out the other end of the case.

The problem with flood motors is the coil windings get corroded and short to the case or to the armature. Which usually renders the motor unusable, and can cause damage to other parts of the cart as well due to increased current draw because of the shorted windings. I'm with everyone else here, that motor just needs to go in the scrap pile. Waste of time to try to do anything with it.

Drain the axle case and see if water comes out. If there is water inside the axle housing, and especially salt water, then it may be rusted beyond repair as well.
Thanks. Appreciate the useful info and I take your valid points. This is what I was looking for.

Have you checked that the field is not shorted to the can? Might save you a pile of dicking around just to find this out after.

It might also save him a pile of money because of the controller he'll have to buy.

UPDATE
Managed to crack the motor open. And without breaking the bearing retainer…
Looks like a major clean on the cards. A new bearing is ordered. The armature and brushes weren’t as bad as I had feared. We’ll see…
